Kieran Doherty Admitted Involvement in Drugs Trade

The IRA has claimed that Kieran Doherty, whom it abducted and murdered last week, had admitted his involvement in a €500,000 cannabis factory uncovered by gardai in Donegal last month. 

In a statement, a representative of its ‘Army Council’ claimed Doherty (31) had made the admission during a six-week ‘investigation’ by the IRA following the discovery of the drugs factory. 

Doherty’s family have strongly denied he was involved in the drugs trade. 

The dissident spokesman said Doherty, who was a prominent member in Derry, had been “interviewed” twice by the IRA before the night of his murder. 

The IRA said that at the second interview, at which Doherty was “court-martialed”, he had made the admission after hearing “witness statements” from other members of the criminal gang who were allegedly involved with him in the cannabis factory. 

The IRA spokesman said that Doherty had been a member of its “GHQ (general headquarters) staff” and had known the organisation’s rules when he joined. 

While Doherty had admitted involvement with the drugs gang, he had denied working for MI5, the spokesman claimed. 

However, the IRA believed that MI5 “had played some role” in the drugs factory which had been set up to “blacken the IRA’s name and link us to the drugs trade which we abhor and oppose”. The cannabis factory was discovered by gardai at a house in Carrigans which was owned by Seamus McGreevy (56) from Co Meath, a founder (R) IRA member who killed himself over a month ago. 

McGreevy had built the house but had been unable to sell it due to the property market slump. He asked Doherty to rent the house to tenants and to act as its caretaker. The two men, who met when they were serving sentences in Portlaoise prison, were described as being “like father and son”. 

The  IRA said that, from its investigation, it believed McGreevy had no involvement in the cannabis factory and was horrified when it was found. “After the drugs factory was uncovered, the IRA stood down its entire Derry brigade pending the outcome of our investigation,” the spokesman said. 

“An outside IRA security team moved in to carry out the inquiry. It was an extensive investigation during which many witnesses, including members of the criminal gang involved in the drugs factory, were interviewed. 

“Those individuals gave statements saying Kieran had been integrally involved in setting up the whole operation and had actually sourced the cannabis plants.” 

The spokesman claimed when Doherty was first interviewed at a paramilitary “court of inquiry”, he denied these allegations. However, the IRA representative claimed that on the second occasion when Doherty faced a “court martial” and was shown statements from the gang members, he “admitted his involvement”. 

The spokesman said that at both “interviews” Doherty had been ordered not to discuss the issue with anybody nor to contact other IRA members. 

“However, on Bloody Sunday (January 31), Kieran phoned Seamus McGreevy who was having lunch at his sister’s home. Whatever Kieran said led to Seamus leaving, returning to his own home, and then hanging himself,” added the spokesman. 

McGreevy came into a very substantial sum of money when a motorway was built through farmland he owned. Republican sources said he gave most of this to the Real IRA and also to ex-prisoners who were struggling financially. They said he had given Doherty money to set up a café for himself but the venture had failed. Republican sources described McGreevy as a “very trusting, quiet countryman”. 

Until the discovery of the drugs factory, Doherty had been a popular member of the IRA nicknamed ‘Harry Potter’ or ‘Goggles’ because of his glasses. The IRA claimed it had “strictly followed the green book”, the IRA’s rulebook which all members endorse, during its ‘investigation’ into Doherty. 

The spokesman claimed that admitting one of its members had become involved in the drugs’ trade, and then killing him, was “not something we did lightly”.

On Saturday 20th February 2010 two members of the IRPWA were collecting for Republican prisoners outside the Credit Union at Abbey Street Derry. Shortly after 9.30am they were approached by members of the RUC/PSNI and one activist had his arms forced up behind his back and was rammed face first up against a wall. During the course of this assault they stole money donated by members of the public. This much needed money is destined for the families of Republican prisoners and this is another example of a offensive by Crown Forces in an attempt to break the resolve of the most vulnerable people in the Republican community . It is our belief that this marked increase in the harassment and intimidation of Republican families is in no small part due to the recent pro British media fanfare led by pro establishment mouthpieces which is attempting to whip up anti-republican hysteria. This has obviously buoyed up this British police force who now feel that they can attack Republicans and working class communities with impunity.

32CSM Clarify Their Position.

The 32CSM would like to take this opportunity to clarify our position regarding our plans to address schools about our concerns regarding the attendance of PSNI officers in local schools. The 32CSM sought to raise the issue of the PSNI in schools because we believe that schools should be a neutral environment and that children shouldn’t be used as a political mechanism to secure broader acceptance of policing arrangements in the Six Counties. Equally we object to the PSNI’s deliberate intimidation of school children as a mechanism to attack Irish republicans. For example, there has been a recent upsurge in the PSNI harassing and searching young children on their way to and from school in each case leaving the pupils extremely distressed. In one instance a house was raided by 15 male armed members of the PSNI who prevented two young girls from attending school. They searched through their personal belongings and videoed their bedrooms. In another incident a six year old girl wet herself during an aggressive search of her father.

Section 44 of the Terrorism Act (which has been ruled illegal under European Law) was employed against two young schoolchildren on their way to school and their persons and schoolbags were searched by heavily armed PSNI personnel. These and other incidents have been well documented in the local press over the last year and the Children’s Commissioner has been contacted in a number of cases. If the very same uniform is to appear in their classroom it would cause obvious distress to the child. We believe that schools should not be accommodating this scenario which causes distress to children, whose parents have entrusted to their care during school hours.

There have been deliberate attempts to misrepresent our position by vote seeking politicians and others who are pursuing an anti-republican agenda. At no stage was the picketing of schools ever contemplated as this would be contrary to our stated position of keeping schools politically neutral. This was made unambiguously clear in the only press release from the 32CSM regarding this issue (Derry Journal 12th Feb 2010). In this article a spokesperson for the 32CSM insists that the letter ‘is not a threat’. The spokesperson goes on to say ‘We are not trying to bully schools but we want to highlight the fact that children are being searched on their way to school. This is not a threat and will be done in an above board way. The letters will contain a contact number that people can call if they want more information’. This article is in the Derry Journal archives and can be viewed by anyone who is interested in verifying our stance.

However, what followed was a media frenzy and a attempt to whip up hysteria with theatrics and absurd comments from PSF spokesperson Martina Anderson, in which she compared the 32CSM’s intentions to the Holy Cross situation. Any rational person cannot fail to see how ridiculous Ms Anderson’s comments are. The throwing of urine filled balloons, pipe bombs and subjecting young children to serious sectarian abuse cannot be equated to sending a letter to schools outlining our concerns. Others who joined the ‘lift the threats’ campaign were Raymond Mc Cartney, Fr Canny, Jim Roddy, Mark Durkan and Eamonn Mc Cann. All of them appeared on TV or radio to join the circus of condemnation of this non existent threat. How they all came to the conclusion that the 32CSM stated intention amounted to a threat is beyond comprehension. One can only conclude that each and every one of them were following their own self serving agendas.

The situation took an even more bizarre twist when a little known ‘mediation’ group was given a front page headline which screamed ‘Peace talk’s plea to dissidents’ (Derry Journal 16th February). The Peace and Reconciliation Group offered to mediate despite continuing to misconstrue our intentions, it is clear that these people already had their minds made up and their offers of ‘mediation’ Were as false as these so called threats. They condemned what they called ‘valid threats’ invited the 32CSM to enter discussions, ‘if they are serious about their political ideology’ and then ended their statement by claiming that this is ‘a time when the majority wants to use the ballot box rather than the bullet.’ This is a strange way to offer ‘mediation’ and rather than contact the 32CSM they chose the front page of the Derry Journal.

At the end of the front page article the Journal admitted to seeing the letter. However, this didn’t prevent them carrying an editorial on page two with headlines ‘withdraw the threat.’ For the record this letter is available for anyone who wishes to view it and people can make their own minds up. The 32CSM is a Republican separatist organisation and we make no apologies for our active opposition to British rule. The recent furore and condemnation coming from the usual pro-establishment quarters will not deflect us from pursuing our Republican politics. In the coming months we intend to intensify our efforts to highlight the nefarious nature and human rights abuses perpetrated by the RUC/PSNI. We will be contacting businesses explaining our opposition to the PSNI/RUC and asking them to stop providing services to this British paramilitary force. If they continue to do so we will exercise our legitimate right to protest against them in the form of name and shame, boycott campaigns and pickets. No amount of sensationalism or scare mongering will deflect us from this.

2008
7 February: The RIRA announced that after a three year period of reorganisation it was ready to "go back to war".
14 February: A suspected RIRA member, Andrew Burns, was killed by a small republican organisation, Óglaigh na hÉireann in the Donegal village of Doneyloop.[
12 May: A PSNI officer was injured when the RIRA attached a booby-trap bomb to his car. The bomb exploded as he drove through the village of Spamount, County Tyrone. The officer was pulled to safety by a passing motorist before the car was engulfed in flames.
25 September: A man survived after being shot in the neck by the RIRA on the County Derry-County Donegal border. The same man was targeted in a pipe bomb attack on his home on 25 October, the RIRA did not claim responsibility for the attack, but security forces believe they were responsible for it.

1 February: The RIRA are believed to have been responsible for leaving a 300lb car bomb in Castlewellan, County Down. The device took 5 days to be defused.
7 March: The RIRA carried out an gun attack on Massereene British Army Barracks, County Antrim. Two British soldiers were shot dead and two other soldiers and two civilians were injured.
2 April: The RIRA in Derry claimed responsibility for carrying out a punishment shooting against a convicted rapist who was awaiting sentencing for raping a 15 year old girl.
12 April: The RIRA claimed responsibility for the death of MI5 agent, Denis Donaldson. Donaldson was killed by the RIRA in Glenties, County Donegal in 2006.
13 July: The RIRA was blamed for shooting at the police in the Ardoyne area of Belfast during 3 days of rioting.
28 August: The RIRA staged a roadblock in the village of Meigh, County Armagh. The unit is reported to have had a rocket launcher, assault rifles and a heavy machine-gun (believed to have been stolen from a Provisional IRA arms dump). A PSNI patrol spotted the group, but withdrew fearing that their presence would provoke a gun battle.
21 September: The RIRA claimed it was responsible for two pipe-bomb attacks on the homes of family members of a PSNI officer in Derry. One of the devices exploded and destroyed a car.[79]
8 October: RIRA members fired a volley of shots over the coffin of the RIRA member John Brady, who died in Police Custody.
22 October: The RIRA claimed responsibility for a small I.E.D. explosion at a British Territorial Army base in North Belfast which caused minor damage to the perimeter barrier of the base. There were no injuries.

31 January: The RIRA claimed responsibility for firing shots at a police station in Bessbrook, County Armagh. It is reported that high velocity weapons where used in this attack.
3 February: The RIRA threw a improvised pipe-bomb at Oldpark PSNI station in Belfast. The device exploded causing minor damage to a perimeter fence.

18 February: The RIRA claimed responsibility for a bomb attack on a house in Coalisland. The RIRA claimed the house which was targeted was owned by people involved in drug dealing and criminality.[98]
22 February: The RIRA were blamed for detonating a 250lb car bomb outside a courthouse in Newry. The bombers issued a code-worded warning that the bomb would explode within 30 minutes, but it exploded 17 minutes later while police were evacuating the area. The courthouse security hut was heavily damaged.[99][100]24 February: The RIRA claimed responsibility for kidnapping and shooting dead a man in County Derry. His body was found on the outskirts of Derry, close to the County Donegal border. The statement claimed he was a RIRA member.

32CSM Warn Shops on Serving Members of British Crown Forces.

Republicans in Derry are planning to send letters to shops and businesses in the city urging them not to serve members of the PSNI.
The 32 County Sovereignty Movement claim to have drawn up a list of businesses and a number of schools in the city who deal with the police and will be contacting them shortly.

The group says letters will be sent to the premises highlighting what they describe as 
the "unacceptable behaviour" of the PSNI.

A spokesperson for the group told the 'Journal' that, if their request for businesses to shun members of the PSNI is ignored, they will stage pickets and "name and shame" shops.

'Not a threat'

The spokesperson insists that the letter "is not a threat" and will be circulated to shops in the coming weeks.

"The Sovereignty Movement will be sending letters to businesses explaining our view on the RUC. 

"It will explain the conduct of the police in terms of stopping and searching children and the families of republicans," he said.
The spokesperson also said they have been contacted by workers who had concerns about serving police officers. "We are aware that staff in some shops have been put under pressure to serve policemen and have been forced to do so by their bosses," he claimed.

May be sent to schools

The 32CSM spokesperson also said the letters could be sent to local schools. "Schools could be included in the list of people who will receive the letters. 

"We are not trying to bully schools but we want to highlight the fact that children area being searched on their way to school.
"This is not a threat and will be done in an above board way. The letters will contain a contact number that people can call if they want more information," he said.

32csm Members Remanded for removing Tags.

Two Derry republicans have removed electronic tagging devices which they were ordered to wear by a District Judge as part of their bail conditions.

The pair, Paul Hutcheon and Gavin Deery, both members of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement (32CSM), appeared in court on Tuesday charged with threatening to kill a 41 year-old woman and detaining her in her home.

 
They were ordered to wear electronic tags around their ankles as part of their bail 
conditions but yesterday both men removed them. The men were also given a curfew of being at agreed addresses from 8pm to 8am each day.

Tampering with an electronic tag is a criminal offence and both men told the 'Journal' that they were prepared to go to jail rather than wear the tags. They also said they now expect to be arrested and taken into custody.

Paul Hutcheon said: "I only allowed myself to be tagged because I had a number of personal affairs to sort out. My girlfriend is pregnant so a curfew is a non-starter for me because she could need to go to the hospital. I am also a carer for my mother and a curfew would not allow me to go to her if she needed me.

"Tags like this are usually given to sex offenders and I'm not prepared to wear one," he said.

Gavin Deery said: "I have a 24 hour breakdown service and I can't do that with a curfew and a tag. I am a republican and I'm not prepared to wear a tag like this. The only reason I took it was to give me a few days to get things sorted," he said.

A spokesperson for the 32 CSM said: "The introduction of electronic tags is yet another example of Britain's criminalisation policy against republicans. Tags are usually served on serious sex offenders and republicans will not wear them.

"The British courts will now be able to hold republicans for lenghtly periods of time on remand in the full knowledge that republicans will not accept these attempts to criminalise them."

The so called Hillsborough Agreement is yet another exercise in fudge endorsed by political parties fearful of an electoral backlash from within their own constituencies. From a republican perspective it reinforces the impotence of the current process in pursuing Irish unity. The pantomime of late night discussions and Prime Ministerial visits can only mask for so long the reality that Stormont is a sectarian talking shop put in place to normalise British rule in Ireland. From London’s position the perfect arrangement has been formulated, Provisional Sinn Fein are now institutionally policing British interests in Ireland. For Dublin, the Hillsborough Agreement offers a welcome distraction away from the economic and financial crisis currently enveloping the Twenty Six Counties and its culpable political leaders.

The conflict in Ireland will not be resolved by creating sub committees and working groups in Stormont. No amount of British money can buy Irish acceptance of its presence in our country. Re-branding the produce of Partition will not disguise Partition for what it is; an affront to Irish sovereignty. The regime at Stormont will return to form just as British backed unionism always intended for it to be. Token nationalist involvement merely offers it a veneer of acceptability.

The 32CSM reiterates our call for a conflict resolution process which actually deals with the cause of the conflict. In the absence of such a process the conflict will continue. Our movement is growing, our analysis is reaching a wider audience. Irrespective of the distractions in Stormont we will see an end to British occupation in our country.

Protest against RUC use of section 44 against kids

On Wednesday morning a local Republican was stopped under section 44.Following the search and on finding nothing the RUC proceeded to remove the children from the car,spreadeagled them against the car before performing a body search on them and searching their schoolbags.

This took place in the week after the section 44 stop and search powers were ruled illegal by the European court of Human Rights.

Local Republicans from the 32csm,RNU and IRSP together with Independent Republicans participated in a hastily arranged protest outside the Strand Road RUC barracks on Wednesday afternoon.
